Augusta Savage was a sculptor and fought for African American rights. She was told to be “Normal” but she refused and did what she loved. She quoted “I was a Leap Year baby, and it seems to me that I have been leaping ever since.”

When Augusta was young, she would play in the naturally forming red clay in her backyard. Her father disapproved of this and got very mad. her father wanted her to be like”normal” children and to play with dolls. Augusta loved sculpting so she did it anyway.

She herself experienced racism and wanted to change it in her own way. She fought against racism through her sculptures.

She was determined to change the world. She wanted to change the world somehow and thought,”why not by art?” So, she sculpted how racism felt to try to make fair rights. She was labeled a troublemaker for standing up for herself and future black people. However, it had a serious effect on stopping racism. Many artists listened to her and changed their perspectives.

She is known for making art pieces that have changed the world.  She was an activist while doing art pieces. She is an unsung hero because she is very unheard-of. Some people know who she is but admire her work. Most people don't know her because white people had a lot more of an opportunity to share their artwork than black people.

In Conclusion, Augusta Savage was an amazing sculptor, educador and  activist. She fought for Africian-American women's rights in her own way. Fun fact, some say she invented the harp!

  3. I loved this blog, and I especially love that name...Augusta SAVAGE! That would be pretty cool if you invented the harp. I've never seen her art, but I will definitely keep my eye out for some. How old was she when she started to professionally create her sculptures?

    1. ´´In the late 1930s, Savage was commissioned to create a sculpture for the 1939 New York World's Fair.´´ That is said to be her first commision, but she has been sculpting since she was very young.
